Today marks the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The paradigm of “post-war” Europe came to a close in 2022 as the Russian military rolled into Kyiv Oblast and Eastern Ukraine. The return of interstate war on the European continent has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions more. The impact of this war will be measured across generations.
Just as Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine has plunged the world into an ongoing crisis, Zelenskyy’s decision to remain in Kyiv and resist Russia’s aggression has shown the international community that tyrants can be resisted - the rapid collapse of the murderous Assad regime may not have been possible if Kyiv did not push back against Moscow. Yet as the Chinese-Iranian-Russian axis of authoritarianism continues to deepen their cooperation with one-another, Ukraine now faces the prospect of losing American support. Victory and a lasting peace seem distant at this time.
I think in the current political climate, we should draw inspiration from figures like Zelenskyy. His leadership and integrity have carried Ukraine through countless crises and his administration has governed under some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Zelenskyy has shown the world that democracy is worth fighting for and it is for this reason that Trump, Musk, and Vance want to see him defeated.
Glory to Ukraine
My forthcoming book “The Folly of Realism: How the West Deceived Itself About Russia and Betrayed Ukraine“ will be released tomorrow, February 25th. This book critically examines American foreign policy towards Russia and Ukraine and draws from my experiences serving in diplomatic posts abroad and inside the National Security Council. Slava Ukraini . And a Shanda and a horror and disgrace that the President of the United States (not MY President) has revealed himself to be not just a puppet of the Russian dictator but also a Quisling.
I am appalled and ashamed of the U.S. new stance with Russia. In my 75 years I never thought that would happen...until Trump was elected. He is a traitor as far as I'm concerned!
My admiration for Zelensky as he tries to navigate these treacherous waters grows each day, and I hope with every fiber of my being that European nations will recognize their own peril and respond by picking up the slack.
