I had several meetings on Capitol Hill Tuesday. I won’t sugarcoat it: The mood was very depressed. There is not enough urgency to passing Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan aid. The Republicans are insistent on extracting immigration reductions and seem happy to hold hostage aid to our allies. And rather than finding a path to compromise, they’re out on a fishing expedition to find or even fabricate dirt on President Biden. The holiday recess begins tomorrow and nothing will happen until Congress reconvenes in January, if there isn’t an 11th hour compromise. Almost everyone I talked to was pessimistic that a deal would come before winter recess.
