On April 1st 2025, Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey broke the record for longest speech in the Senate. For 25 hours, Senator Booker spoke of the dangers of the current administration and the imperative to resist the agenda laid out by Trump and oligarchs like Elon Musk. Booker’s marathon speech eclipsed Ted Cruz’s failed attempt to block the passage of the Affordable Care Act and Strom Thurmond’s 24 hour filibuster of the Civil Rights Act.
After passing the 19 hour mark, Senator Booker stated the following:
“My efforts today are inadequate to stop what they’re trying to do. But we the people are powerful.”
There’s a lesson to be learned in these displays of bravery from representatives like Senator Booker.
