It is a disaster. Trump thinks in business terms. Not diplomatic terms. Back payments? We didn't contribute the $350B he claims. He exaggerated it for his base. Like everything. We gave them military equipment we were going to scrap anyway.

Trump adores Putin and wants to be considered one of the “big boys club”- devoid of ethics, honour, intelligence or integrity, he is an easy mark for the murderous Putin.

A VERY EASY MARK!!!! All a leader of state has to do is tell trump how great he is & trump will roll over & show his massive belly to be rubbed.

As usual, excellent insight, Alex. And while you most assuredly are correct about this, there are many people asking every day, even though they did what was humanly possible to avoid this election outcome, what more can they do? Filing more suits, just overloads the courts. Civil disobedience, only goes so far before martial law is evoked. He’s limited in his capacity to see a future where Putin has taken over larger swaths of Europe, and, they are friendly no more. Wanting the be the “greatest president ever” he’s so easily manipulated by the idea that he can get vengeance, and have the appearance of keeping his campaign promises, if only he moves fast enough, and calls it efficiency. Sorry to vent. I appreciate this point though.

For someone who made their fortune on grifting and short-sheeting the suckers, Trump seems a dewy-eyed mark in this deal. Putin doesn’t have to fool him much - Trump doesn’t give a damn already.

He wouldn’t care if there’s a Holodomor II and the Ukrainian people are exterminated. He wants his Peace Prize, dammit!

Uncle Joe didn’t get one.

I would suggest the Peace Prize committee not inflate his already outsized ego any further and let him order his own ersatz prize, like his Time magazine covers he plasters everywhere for the world to see…and mock!

I could not agree with you more, Alex. In addition, not only will the ceasefire be all but nonexistent (I give it a couple of weeks at best) I don’t see Putin ever letting Trump get away with raiding Ukraine’s earth minerals for the US. With Russia’s position economically and militarily, they need all the income they can get. No way are they going to give Trump that kind of gift, opting to use it for their own purposes. The US is going to make the situation far worse and get screwed in the process. If Europeans are smart, they’re going to get with Ukraine on military and security support as well as weapons development and manufacturing. But first, some of their leaders (Starmer for one) need to get over the pipe dream of the possibility of changing the mind of a psycho. We don’t need another Neville Chamberlain living in a dream world.

"Trump has already shown himself to be forgiving of Putin’s open disrespect towards American negotiators and willing to cut Ukraine aid - why wouldn’t the Russians push for more concessions? Why would they view the United States as being a counterweight to their interests, rather than being completely complacent to their demands? The reality is that Donald Trump’s frantic push for “peace” will lead to more instability and violence in the near future. For an administration that views itself as focused on negotiations, this is looking like a bad deal for Ukraine."

Not only is it a "bad deal for Ukraine" it is a bad deal for the world! Once Putin extracts the maximum from these 'negotiations'. He'll subjugate Ukraine, sit on his laurels for a bit & then pick his next victims. I'm going to guess that he may consider the Baltic States as the easiest conquest, face it how many Americans can even name the three countries that will lose their independence. Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania. Poland of course is in the mix but lots of people know the country of Poland so that would elicit more of an outcry, maybe, but once a dictator is on a roll there is no telling where it will end. Actually that's not true. Dictators & their cronies eventually wind up in jail or dead, many times by killed by their 'subjects'! (Mussolini of Italy. Ceaușescu of Romania.)

So while donald trump may think that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Here's a handy Google AI summary of the prize: "The Nobel Peace Prize is an international award presented annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals or organizations who have made the most significant contributions to "fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the holding and promotion of peace congresses." So what do you think? My guess is that trump doesn't even understand the phrase 'fraternity between nations'.
