How To Talk About Ukraine with U.S. Voters
Ukraine Advocates know their reasons for supporting Ukraine and the facts about supporting Ukraine but here is a summary that might be helpful during election season.
A recent Wall Street Journal Poll asked voters which candidate will better handle the Ukraine War and there are lots of arguments being made about the war that are influencing voters as most Americans agree they support Ukraine but they might not be sure of which solutions will deliver the best solutions to the conflict for the United States.
Former Ambassador Maria Yovanovitch was interviewed by GOTVforUkaine and discussed why supporting Ukraine matters for Americans as we must send a message that the United States will protect our values and interests.
She addressed several facts that are being twisted into Disinformation about Ukraine:
Ukraine combats Corruption and Russia does not
Almost all of the "Ukraine Aid" Funds are spent at home
Alliances are the best path to Peace
Ukraine can win if we provide necessary assistance
Russia is hurting and even needs North Korean soldiers
Making a "deal" with Putin requires the input of our allies
Here is some supporting information that Ukraine Advocates might want to share with candidates and voters this election season so they fully understand what is at stake and why the United States should do more:
U.S. and Russia gave security assurances to Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons as outlined in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.
Ukraine stood with the U.S. after 9/11 and sent troops to Afghanistan and Iraq.
Further Russian aggression will lead to mass genocide and further the Ukraine Refugee Crisis which will have profound effects on both Europe and the United States as it deals with challenges to manage migration from impoverished countries coming through the southern border.
Putin will continue to divide NATO with similar escalating tactics used in Ukraine which will require further investment in defending its Eastern flank.
Other enemies such as China and Iran will be emboldened if the United States cannot stand up to Putin’s aggression. The stakes in Taiwan will be even greater as it is the world’s leading chip manufacturer.
The United States has invested less in Ukraine per capita than many European countries and the aid is being well-spent with unprecedented levels of oversight.
Ukraine has successfully invested aid into developing state-of-the-art defense capabilities that have helped liberate about half of the territory seized since the full-scale invasion began and protected Black Sea trade routes which has been critical to the worldwide grain supply for developing countries around the world.
A large majority of “Ukraine Aid” entails manufacturing billions of dollars of new equipment in the United States creating thousands of American jobs. And in many cases the new equipment stays at home and the older equipment is shipped to Ukraine. American-made F-16s recently arrived on the frontlines with lots of fanfare but they are older generation fighter jets originally built in the 1970s.
The destruction in Ukraine is more costly to the U.S. and Europe than it is to defend it especially in terms of higher food and energy costs which have been stabilizing. Russia recently destroyed the largest power plant in Kiev worth hundreds of millions of dollars and are consistently targeting power infrastructure.
